PhotoTraining4U Moves On Training Videos Subtitles Challenge

‘Deaf people, including photographers, have been excluded for too long’ – Cardiff-based photographer Dafydd Everleigh

PhotoTraining4U Moves On Training Videos Subtitles Challenge

Thousands of deaf photographers in the UK and worldwide are set to benefit after an angry Welsh photographer complained that key photo-training videos lacked subtitles.

Cardiff-based Dafydd Everleigh, an amateur landscape shooter, contacted PhotoTraining4U.com founder Mark Cleghorn when he noticed the site’s training videos had no subtitles.

Mr Everleigh said: “I was extremely upset and annoyed about it. Deaf people have been excluded from society for too long. I accept that even eighteen months ago subtitles on flash based movies were both expensive and very difficult to do - but technology has moved on and now providing subtitles is relatively cheap. There is just no excuse not to subtitle online videos – in fact it could be financially rewarding for training organisations as a whole new audience will be able to access the services. For example, the Facebook group, ‘Deaf Photographers’ – alone boasts over 1300 members.
There is no specific requirement to subtitle web-based movies but the Disability Discrimination Act which states that services must be reasonably adjusted and be made accessible.”

He added: “I contacted Mark Cleghorn about this and although it has taken some time, I am delighted that he is now providing subtitles on all his training videos.
His PhotoTraining4U site is a terrific idea because it allows people to learn what they want, when they want and where they want. There is far more flexibility compared to the conventional training approaches, like college tuition - and it doesn’t matter if you are ill.

PhotoTraining4U founder, Mark Cleghorn said: “Dafydd contacted us directly and he was rightly very upset that we had no subtitles on our training videos.
We were actually working on the challenge at that time but it took us a while to put it into effect.
Dafydd’s comments are all valid and his complaint stirred us into accelerating our pioneering subtitle programme. Now all new videos have subtitles options and within weeks our entire back catalogue will also have this facility.”

Hundreds sign up for ‘real and raw’ specialist photo-training videos online

Hundreds sign up for ‘real and raw’ specialist photo-training videos online:

So what do you need to learn today?

UK photo guru Mark Cleghorn is asking Photography Monthly readers: ‘So what do you need to learn today?

Hundreds of photographers nationwide have already signed up to his pioneering online photo-training website; Phototraining4U.com since its official launch at Focus this spring.

Billed as ‘the UK’s first affordable and comprehensive online photo-training solution’,
the site provides video tutorials in bite-sized learning chunks with at least one brand new twenty minute lesson added to the site’s knowledge bank each week.

Says Cleghorn, one of Europe’s top ranked and most respected professional photographers:
“This programme is the first of its kind in the UK. The photographer’s skill level doesn’t matter. You can be a seasoned professional or a complete novice. Just log on and select the video tutorial that you want to learn about at that time. Phototraining 4U is all about lifting the technical fog.”

Now leading social lab, Loxley Colour, is pledging a £100 voucher to every new photographer subscribing to Cleghorn’s soaraway website and every photographer signing up to his £199 a year training programme will also receive free onOne PHOTOTOOLS 1 plug-in software worth over £100.

Adds Cleghorn, who holds no less than four industry Fellowships and has notched up hundreds of photo-awards in a 25 year career: “This has been years in the planning but now it has really got wings – and expansion plans are already underway. “

“I want to show photographers how they can improve; how they can sidestep all those mistakes I made along the way. And right now in the middle of a recession increasing numbers of amateur photographers are looking at Phototraining4U as a must-have launch guide to a new career.”

The site’s ‘knowledge bank’ already boasts over 35 hours of training and includes tutorial videos on a wide raft of topics including: camera and lighting techniques; software applications: posing subjects: marketing strategies, PR, back to basics: photography fundamentals revisited hints and tips for every day shooting; how to beat the recession and which kit to buy.

Says Cleghorn: This is 21st century learning at its best – these are genuinely affordable short lessons that can easily fit into a daily coffee break.
We are proving that Phototraining4u can transform the way photographers work and the profits they can make – and all for the price of a coffee and a sandwich per session.”

Loxley Colour Marketing Director Chris Kay comments: “There is a substantial market for ‘on demand’ professional training at a cost-effective price -and Mark is providing it.
Photography can be a lonely world for newcomers too, and Phototraining4U enables them to access top quality tuition.
New registrants can redeem our voucher against any Loxley product, including print, until the promotion ends later this year.”

PRESS RELEASE

Photo Training 4 U · 14 Jan 2009

Top photographer launches pioneering online training programme - ‘High quality training should be affordable and easily accessible to all’– Mark Cleghorn

One of Britain’s best-known photographers has launched a revolutionary online training site that he claims could change forever the way photographers learn their profession.

Cardiff-based Mark Cleghorn, who holds four industry Fellowships and has hundreds of photo-awards to his name, including 17 coveted Kodak Gold Awards, has spent months secretly setting up Phototraining4u.com – a unique ‘affordable’ online resource for both amateur and professional photographers.

Cleghorn revealed: “Alongside my own photography business I have been teaching and training photographers for 16 years both in the UK and abroad. Now I have channelled all that priceless experience into this pioneering new venture. Phototraining4u has been launched to provide high quality online training for photographers at all levels – and all for the price of a coffee and a sandwich per session. Our customers will be able to access a minimum of 50 videos at launch, covering all aspects of photography from camera lighting, software techniques and application, to business ideas, tips and tricks of the trade and constantly updated new kit reviews.”

He added: “Each video session will be coffee break length (around 20 minutes) and we will be adding a new theme each week. Photographers can dip in and out as they wish. The streaming video will be ‘Real and Raw’ and our subscribers can simply search the menu for the topics they want to cover. And they can access the video content as many times as they want at no extra cost.”

Cleghorn, who will be promoting the new programme extensively at Focus, is discounting the £199 annual fee to £149 (including VAT) for photographers signing up before the 1st of March.

He said: “This new programme enables photographers to learn both new and ‘back to basics’ techniques on every photo-subject under the sun – and in handy bite-size chunks. They will be able to monitor real client shoots and the sessions will be ‘warts and all’…. showing how professionals cope in real-life situations. If, for example we’re shooting on a beach and it starts raining – we will show photographers how to cope with that situation. If a small child won’t stop crying during a video shoot about family portrait photography – we will describe in real time how to solve that challenge.”

Cleghorn admits his new site will negatively affect sales of his own extensive library of ‘how-to’ videotapes that he has been selling for years at up to £70 a time. “All that is now history” he said. “This is the new way. Photographers need top quality training that they can afford and that is easily accessible…especially during a recession. This new programme provides the perfect solution. It’s a no-brainer.”

Key imaging companies, including manufacturers and a leading prolab, are being lined up to work with the Phototraining4u.com programme.

Said Cleghorn: “We are talking to some major companies about how we can evolve the programme over coming months.”

Leibovitz pawns copyright to pay debts

Annie Leibovitz gives up rights to her work - Renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz has pawned the rights to her work to help pay off her debts.

World famous photographer Annie Leibovitz has given away the rights to her negatives and contract rights so she could receive a loan to pay off her debts.

According to the New York Times the photographer borrowed $15.5m (£10.8m) from Art Capital Group in New York. The paper says the loan is to pay off mortgages as well as other financial worries.

Reports suggest the Art Capital Group expect to make around $120m (£83.3m) in art-related loans this year.

PRESS RELEASE
pocket-wizard-minitt1-transmitter-and-flextt5.jpg

Professional photographers have depended on PocketWizard radio slaves for reliable triggering of their manual flashes and cameras for years. With the advent of digital technology, photographers have been seeking a simple solution for off-camera TTL flash without limitations or complexity. PocketWizard has made it possible with the “Slide-n-Shoot” simplicity of the new ControlTL™ system, featuring the MiniTT1™ Transmitter and FlexTT5™ Transceiver for Canon and Nikon. These new E-TTL II and i-TTL capable radio slaves make taking off-camera flash as effortless as slide-in, turn-on and shoot.

Now you can get perfect off-camera flash photos in any environment — around corners, out-of-sight and in bright sun. Canon and Nikon users can use the new MiniTT1 Transmitter and FlexTT5 Transceiver to control single or multiple off-camera Canon E-TTLII or Nikon i-TTL flashes at speeds up to 8/fps.

The MiniTT1 Transmitter is a tiny, low-profile unit (2.8 x 1.9 x 1.3 inches) that slides into the camera’s hot shoe. The FlexTT5 Transceiver is also low-profile but slightly larger (3.6 x 2.9 x 1.4 in.) transceiver. Both take the complex TTL data being sent through the camera’s hot shoe and digitally transmit it in a reliable radio signal. Photographers can now place TTL (or manual) flash units anywhere to illuminate the scene: behind walls, under tables, on stands – anywhere out of sight. Each flash unit is connected to a dedicated FlexTT5 Transceiver for TTL operation; there are no wires or connecting cables required. Any change in ISO, aperture and shutter speed is automatically adjusted for. Changes in flash exposure compensation on your camera are passed along giving you convenient remote power control of your TTL flash. The new units are compatible with any PocketWizard for triggering manual flash or remote cameras or you can mix your TTL flash with any manual flash if desired.

These products are the beginning of a new era in PocketWizard technology featuring the ControlTL firmware. Designed for the latest in digital cameras, ControlTL enables some previously impossible camera capabilities including HyperSync™. HyperSync enables photographers to achieve standard sync speeds up to 1/500 second and not just with TTL flash, but with any flash.

Need more speed? Push beyond 1/500th and go into FP/High-Speed sync mode automatically. No buttons to press or settings to change other then your shutter speed will give you flash sync all the way to 1/8000th. Photographers can now use flash with wide-open apertures, outdoors in bright sunlight resulting in some amazing new images.

Both units have a two-position channel switch with “Learn” mode that can be programmed either by computer or with another PocketWizard radio. The system works on 20 ControlTL channels or any of PocketWizard’s 32 existing channels for traditional triggering and it works with Canon and Nikon’s A-B-C zone capabilities including ratios. Plug a Mini or Flex unit into a computer with the PocketWizard utility software loaded and you can configure channel and zone settings, HyperSync timing, sleep timers and more or just update the unit’s firmware with the push of a button.

The new MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radios can do all this and more and as digital technology advances, more capabilities will be added to the system, essentially offering “future proof” technology.

Versions for Canon are available March 1st, Nikon in 2Q, 2009. US & Canadian markets. Other markets expected to be delivered April 1. Please contact your local distributor for availability.

PocketWizard products, including the PlusII, MultiMax, MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 are made by LPA Design, based in South Burlington, Vermont and sold by distributors around the world
